Gold

In goldsmithing, pure metal is never used; this is done not to reduce the cost of the product, but because precious metals would not have the mechanical properties necessary for machining.

Then ,once mined ,Gold can be processed by melting it together with other more or less noble metals, resulting in a precious metal alloy.

Gold still remains prevalent, but will have a lower purity due to the presence of other metals.

Alloys are obtained by exploiting the properties that Copper and Silver have of changing the color of pure gold to red and green, respectively.

By varying the proportions of copper and silver, the color of gold varies from red, to pink ,to yellow and green (little known and used).

White gold, on the other hand, as we know it now, was introduced in the 1920s in order to be able to produce white jewelry at a lower cost, compared to using platinum, which was the only alternative at the time.

To measure the loss of purity of the metal, gold carats (Kt not to be confused with Ct units of measurement for diamonds)intervene, which are intended to titrate the amount of pure gold present in the metal alloy.

Kt then, corresponds to a unit of measurement that indicates the purity of the gold present within a precious object according to the parts of pure metal it contains.

There are different carats of gold, the most commonly used being:

  • 9 Kt in which the percentage of pure gold is 37.5 percent
  • 14 Kt in which the percentage of pure gold is 58.33%.
  • 18 Kt in which the percentage of pure gold is 75 %.
  • 22 Kt in which the percentage of pure gold is 91.67%
  • 24 kt in which the percentage of pure gold is 99.99 %.

How to choose a diamond

If you have found yourself reading this Blog ,you are surely facing the age-old question of choosing an engagement ring or, for that matter , any other occasion that requires a piece of jewelry to seal that moment.

The most important part from an economic point of view, is THE DIAMOND

In this article we will try to give you as much information as possible on how to choose it according to the available Budget.

Choosing a Diamond is not a simple matter.

There are basic characteristics to be taken into consideration for the best selection, these can be summarized in the now “famous” four Cs :

  • Color = Color
  • Cut = cut
  • Carat = weight
  • Clarity = purity

COLOR (color) is definitely one of the most important influencing its choice being the most obvious and appreciable even to the naked eye.

Diamond is colorless by nature, but it can take on shades ranging from gray to yellow due to the presence of other chemical compounds.

Obviously the color shades affect its beauty.

Diamonds are graded according to color scale ranging from D to Z where , D-E-F ensure the perception of noncolor ,G-H-I-J-K almost colorless, L-M light yellowish, N-O very light yellow , P-Q-R light yellow, R to Z yellow.

CUT

When you cut a diamond ,what you want to achieve is that as much light as possible is returned to the beholder, thus achieving maximum brilliance.

One of the elements to be considered is the Fire i.e. the colored flashes that ,can be observed in a diamond ,due to Dispersion i.e. the ability to break down white light into its basic components. In a cut diamond the fire consists of the facets of the crown.

In addition to that, it is also necessary to take into consideration the finish of the diamond, given by the polish that ,concerns the presence of scratches ,bangs , surface burns, abraded edges, (so it is of paramount importance that the surface of the facets is perfectly smooth) and symmetry that instead is based on the presence of external features, such as additional facets, cutting irregularities ;

They are evaluated through the following scale:

  • EXELLENT (excellent) is the best cut where there is maximum focus and brilliance, almost all the light entering the stone is reflected;
  • VERY GOOD fire and luster are very good, and almost all the light entering the stone is reflected correctly.
  • GOOD (good) fire and luster are good and most of light entering the stone is reflected
  • FAIR (medium) part of the light comes out to the side or from the ends, the diamond is not very bright
  • POOR (poor) the light is poorly reflected and the stone will look dull

There are different types of cuts, the most famous is undoubtedly, the Brilliant Cut, but there are also:

the oval, teardrop ,emerald ,princess cut,

the marquise cut, asscher, heart

the cuschion,radiant and pear cut.

CARAT (carat) is the weight of the diamond ,derived from Greek and stood for seeds and therefore used in precision weighings such as that of precious stones

Specifically 1/5 of a gram = 1 Carat

1 Gram = 5 Carats.

CLARITY (clarity) indicates the clarity and homogeneity of a cut diamond , the presence ,in fact , of inclusions or other imperfections represents a disturbing element.

Numerous minerals can be observed within a diamond, including spinel, garnet, olivine etc. They have proven to be very important in the formation of the same, and the presence of certain crystalline inclusions prove its natural origin.

Inside the stone it is possible to find fractures ,original to the crystal and formed during the crystal’s ascent.

In order to assess the purity of the stone, it must be observed with a 10X lens.

Factors that contribute to determining the clarity grade of a diamond are the size of inclusions, their location and color:

– The greater the inclusion the lower the purity;

– The greater the number of inclusions , the lower the purity;

– inclusions in the center of the stone are more penalizing ,than those placed in the lateral or profnde areas of the stone.

The purity scale is characterized as follows:

  • IF (internal flawless) = internally pure
  • VVS1-VVS2 (very very small inclusion)= presence of very small inclusions-almost pure;
  • VS1-VS2 (very small inclusion) =presence of very small incusions – slightly included
  • SI1-SI2 (small inclusion) =presence of small inclusions-low purity grade;
  • I1-I2-I3 (inclusion)=presence of inclusions visible to the naked eye.

The only way to be sure of a correct valuation of a diamond is to rely on an internationally accredited Certification Body.

Those that ,we think it appropriate to recommend to you and to whom we ourselves turn for the certification of our stones , are:

  • IGI :International Gemological Institute
  • GIA :Gemological Institute of America;
  • HRD Antwerp : Hoge Raad voor Diamant (High Council of Diamond in Antwerp).

Aqva&co jewelry of refined elegance (from www.missgio.it)

“Good morning dear jewelry-loving friends, today in my blog, I am telling you about a new Brand, AQVA&CO, created by a young couple from Sicily, Roberta and Antonio, two young people with refined aesthetic taste, united by mutual love and a common passion for jewelry.

Roberta and Antonio told me how their story was born at sea, thanks to their love of diving and the underwater world, hence the name Aqva&co.

Their passion and love is reflected in their creations, full of elegance and attention to detail, reminiscent of a finesse from another era. Antonio and Roberta work in beautiful little Monreale, and their collections are influenced by the cultural influences of the place where they grew up, where they studied and where they breathe the air of beauty and refinement.

Aqua & co’s jewelry is all unique pieces, handcrafted with care and passion by Antonio, each one the result of careful experimentation.What struck me about their work is their ability to create jewelry in apparenzasimple, inconspicuous, extremely refined, delicate, classic taste, but with an extra attention to detail that makes them special and unique.

The beauty of their creations suits every type of woman and occasion, and it is nice to be able to show them off with any outfit, from the simplest to the most elegant.
Aqua&co allows you to choose from numerous collections: SQUARE, BUBBLE, BOLD, SASSI, GOBU all with their own specific feature, but all absolutely enjoyable and you can choose either silver jewelry with modern and attractive design, or jewelry in gold, diamonds and precious or semi-precious stones.

I confess that among all of them, my favorite is the GoBu collection, in green color, and if you look carefully at the earrings, necklace or ring, you can see the waves of the sea, the symbol of their logo; I find them gorgeous, and as you can see from the photos, you can combine them together to create an even more unique and special piece.

My dear friends, then what about the BUBBLE collection, perfect jewelry to wear in the coming spring, piercing model earrings, luxurious, but also easy to wear and bright and sparkling colors…. By now knowing me you can imagine that I will wear more than one of them and of course, the more colorful they are, the more perfect they will be for me.

Until next week with a new article from your MissGio”

We would like to thank Giorgia Zoppolato for the beautiful article and wonderful photos.

Emerald over 1.5 kg found in the Urals

A huge rare emerald has been discovered in the Russian Urals: it weighs over 1.5 kg and was found in the Malyshevsky deposit, Europe’s largest emerald mine. According to the Russian state company Rostecis the largest stone found in the mine in the last decade: experts estimate it has a length of 14 cm and a width of 7 cm and could be worth about 4 million rubles (more than $70,000).

“The crystal was noticed in time and raised to the surface, so its original shape was preserved,” explained Evgeny Vasilevsky, director of the Malysheva division. According to the Guild of Jewelers of Russia it is a unique emerald and apparently of the highest quality. “In general, emeralds are quite rare stones, unlike diamonds or sapphires,” the association’s director, Edward Utkin, pointed out in an interview with Radio Sputnik, ” while specifically large emeralds are precisely unique stones.

The largest emerald previously found in the Malysevsky field was named “President” in honor of Russia’s first president Boris Yeltsin and weighed 1.2 kg. Emeralds from the Urals are highly valued on the global gemstone market because they have a unique yellowish hue, which is not typical of this mineral, and are known by the brand name “Malyshevsky emeralds.”

Rostec recently announced plans for a tenfold increase in emerald production by 2025. The company said it plans to develop new deposits of precious and semiprecious stones in the Malyshevsky field, including emeralds, alexandrites, and beryllium. The company plans to modernize the existing production complex by introducing new technologies.

Diamonds in Angola, a 1 billion carat potential

A study conducted by Angolan and Russian geologists as part of a cooperation agreement between the Alrosa Group and Endiama has divided the country into four areas.Angola has a total diamond potential of more than 1 billion carats, emerges from a study conducted by Angolan and Russian geologists as part of a cooperation agreement between the mining group Alrosa and the country’s national diamond company Endiama.

Of the total figure, more than 950 million are kimberlites and at least 50 million are alluvial material, deputy director of the Alrosa Group’s Geological Exploration Unit Victor Ustinov said in Luanda, reported by Prensa Latina news agency.

The expert also added that the number could rise to 1.5 billion carats if further studies were conducted on the country’s potential. The study divided the Angolan territory into four areas with different potentials. Geologists concluded that most of the kimberlites discovered in the country are innortheastern Angola and belong to an area called “open territories,” where they are exposed to the air and are visible. In 2016, 9 million carats of diamonds were mined in Angola, including 7 in the Catoca mine.

The rules for the perfect gift

Every gift, whether planned or spontaneous, is full of symbolic meaning, memories or promises, can convey emotions and feelings, and has a single purpose: to offer joy to the recipient. Or at least that is how it should be. Because in reality, things – spoiled by an unwritten but unrelenting label that establishes occasions, value, mode, even type – go a little differently.

In America, home of the art of giftgiving,commentators and hotshot bloggers are now producing hilarious pieces not so much on the art of giving as on the art of surviving the duty of giving and the feelings of inferiority and inadequacy or worse social blame that might result from a gift not living up to the hype.

At the center of the debate, at a time of crisis and widespread economic insecurity, are gifts bought only “out of obligation,” from children’s party bags, mostly filled with useless junk, to Christmas gifts remedied at the last moment after a frantic search on Amazon; not to mention gifts designed for friends of a certain age, “who now have everything,” and who, in their quest for originality at all costs, border on reckless futility.

Actually, now as in past decades, the perfect gift is the result of the very few rules mentioned at the beginning. A successful gift is always the result of sincere attention to the recipient, not personal gratification; it is a spontaneous sign of affection, expecting nothing in return; it has symbolic meaning and speaks of shared moments and emotions.

Here’s that the upcoming end-of-year holidays could be a great occasion for jewelry, precious and durable by nature, the result of ancient Iavorations, creativity, passion: a small masterpiece to always carry with you, which knows how to move and amaze. This is well known by Jude Law who gave his then fiancée Sienna Miller, a singer as well as an actress, a piano that concealed a splendid diamond and sapphire ring inside. And Audrey Hepburn of Breakfast at Tiffany’s knew it very well when she quizzed with a hint of cynicism, “A man is judged by the earrings he gives you.”

Back reshoring: new opportunities for Italian Made in Italy enterprises

Over the past decades there have been intense processes of production relocation in favor of foreign contexts connoted by significant comparative advantages in terms of, for example, labor and raw material costs.

More recently, however, this process seems to be experiencing a reversal, referred to as back-reshoring, whereby production activities previously outsourced by major business groups are returning to their country of origin. In the United States, this phenomenon is now an established reality, thanks in part to government incentives and lower costs related to energy supply.

The interesting fact is that our country is also witnessing a shift in this direction. A recent study has shown how some relevant Italian companies (e.g., Furia, Nannini, Beghelli) have left the countries where they were established to return to the Bel Paese. The reasons behind such a choice are many.

Undoubtedly, at present, labor costs have been outweighed by logistics costs. Coupled with this, firms appear increasingly wary of the political instability and, therefore, country risk that characterizes foreign contexts. Moreover, production offshoring can erode the image capital associated with the so-called “made in” effect (Maizza, 2014).

The striking fact is that Italy appears in first place among European countries affected by back-reshoring, second only to the United States of America. 40.7 percent of the 194 European cases of “repatriation” involve Italian companies, operating – in most cases – in the Classic Sectors of Made in Italy: textiles and footwear (43 percent),l ‘electrical and electronics (18.6 percent), automotive (5.8 percent) furniture and furnishing components (5.8 percent), from the biomedical sector(4.7 percent), health and wellness (4.7 percent), mechanical (4.7 percent) (Dl Legge” 2015).

It will be necessary to monitor ll phenomenon further before we can say whether it will have a large-scale impact or remain an entrepreneurial choice of a few. What is certain is that back-reshoring can be a concrete strategy to sustain the competitiveness of the Italian manufacturing industry at a time when emerging countries no longer offer the same certainties as they did a few years ago.

In fact, bringing businesses closer to their countries of origin means drastically reducing rlsponse times to the market, adding value to production through greater flexibility and emphasis on the Italian character of production. Made in Italy support policies can be an important incentive for business repatriation.

However, companies must necessarily carry out a rethinking of their international strategies that rewards the full valorization of the origin of productions, a decisive asset for successfully competing in global markets.
